I noticed that "impress your crush" thing when I was also in high school, only, it was my friends who were in the situation, not me. I learned the guitar when I was just a kid. Seven or eight, I don't really remember now. I can sympathize with the wanting to impress your "crush" reason to start playing. I started playing bass in high school to do just that.
